Elephant Nature Park

We are building the large chain free shelter for our male elephants to provide them more space. FaaMai’s family group will take over Navaan’s shelter, and their old shelter will be taken out to increase day area for the rambunctious youngsters. If you are worried and wondering why we separate Navaan and other male elephants from their family, Navaan was pushed out of his matriarchal herd when he reached sexual maturity which is normal for male elephants. Male elephants are solitary in nature but may associate with other bulls (adult males) in a small group.

So, we are now building the bigger area where Navaan can roam freely, enjoy swimming in the pool and rolling around in the mud. He will be moving in very soon, maybe as soon as in the next 3 weeks. We are also making spaces next to Navaan’s shelter for the other male elephants. There will be 4 more shelters and we hope to complete them all before the rains arrive. Elephant of the Week 11 September 2023: Celebrating SanMueng’s 1st year of freedom

Sanmueng was rescued by Save Elephant Foundation on 10th of September 2022 and this update celebrates the 1st year of his release to freedom. SanMueng is a bull elephant taken from his mother’s care at the tender age of three and forced to perform at the Phuket Zoo. He was forced to “dance” to music, to play musical instruments and perform demeaning tricks for tourist’s entertainment. The lengthy performances were held up to three times a day and SanMeung was required to follow commands under the threat of a sharp “bullhook”.

Flashback Friday 8 September 2023: A short story of our handsome young bull named Navaan

Navaan (meaning “gold” in Cambodian) was born at Elephant Nature Park in the early hours of October 28, 2012, to a chorus of trumpeting and elephant gossip. Navaan will never work and will never have his spirit broken in a phajaan. He was so adorable as a baby, and such a winsome lad growing up within a family of ever expanding Nannies.

Elephant of the Week 31 July 2023: Jokia

Jokia joined our elephant family in 1997. Mae Perm, the Park’s first rescue, embraced her right away when they met and they were best friends until Mae Perm passed in 2016. Through Mae Perm, Jokia was introduced to many elephants, and, most significantly, to SriPrae who took Jokia into her family when Mae Perm died. Jokia became nanny to Navaan and the closest friend to his mother.

She never presented any signs she was pregnant, so we were quite surprised to hear the elephant commotion in the early morning, said Sangduen Lek Chailert, the founder of Save Elephant Foundation. Given the long gestation period of elephants and the lack of fertile bulls at Elephant Nature Park upon SriPrae’s arrival at the park, we are convinced she was already pregnant when we rescued her. We have so many false pregnancies at the park we never suspected she might have been carrying a baby.

Kaavan loves to explore his jungle and particularly enjoys roaming at night

We asked Kavaan's Mahout to tell us a little about Kaavan. This is what he told us: Kaavan loves to explore the jungle and grasslands of Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary and his many meandering paths are telltale. He prefers to sleep in the jungle as well, except during heavy rains when he will shelter under the roof that was built for him.

Scientists often say that only animals with a thumb can use tools. Clearly elephants do not have thumbs but their trunks are extremely versatile.
In this video we see SriPrae clearing mud from the crevice where her foot joins her leg, the site of the landmine injury, with a stick she holds in her trunk.
