Bua Keaw finally arrive Elephant Nature Park
We heard a story about Bua Keaw from some of the mahouts who work in the tourist camp. They told us that an old elephant with one eye blind and the other failing still had to work transporting people all day with a saddle on her back. A long day would leave her so tired, moving slowly with little energy for that employment. The mahout saw that she needed to rest ! The owner was looking to sell her, as her work effort was no longer satisfactory. Bua Keaw need to be retired from riding. The mahout contacted us to inform about her condition.
Her journey to the new home started in the late evening of 22 January 2018. During the a cold night, our rescue team drove Bua Keaw from Pattaya to Chiang Mai. Bua Keaw has a good appetite for one not having traveled on a truck for many years. Her digestion was patent, no bloat as can happen – lots of poop though elongated according to her age. That aside, she is quite calm, sleeping at times and preferring when the truck comes to a stop. She finally arrived the park safely and she was so excited. She walked straight to her shelter, put her feet on the soft sand pile then walk around to explore the new surrounding.
Now Bua Keaw is the new member of Elephant Nature Park. Even though many decades pass from a more appropriate time, today she will have a glimpse of a life that she always deserved to experience, free from fear and harm and hopefully soon in the life-giving embrace of her own kind. Deep gratitude must surely go to Melanie and Ed Thorne from the USA , who have donated the funds to bring Bua Keaw to our project, commencing her freedom with us. We will do everything that we can to satisfy Bua Keaw’s needs, to allow for a smile on her days ahead.
