Elephants are the largest land animal, they must eat a lot of food to keep that huge body fed. They need to eat 10% of their weight per day, if they are 4,000 kilograms of weight so they need 400 kilograms of food per day. The elephant also needs minerals. They eat dirt to supplement sodium. Wild elephant seeks out natural mineral licks, regions of soil where minerals are concentrated with important conservation implications but for domestic elephants they cannot find that source readily.
