KhunDej is a young male elephant, born in central Thailand around 2010. He was rescued to Elephant Nature Park in 2014 where he immediately started treatment for a serious injury to his leg.
We’re taking Grandma Sopa home. Another life retired from a life of onerous work. For nearly seven decades, Grandma Sopa has worked to serve humans. Sopa’s life path is not so different from other old elephants who have worked hard in various occupations.
The harmful effects of PM2.5 dust are not limited to humans alone; animals are also gravely affected. This year, the smog has been worse than any other year in recent memory, and the devastating consequences are evident. There are days where we cannot even see groups of elephants who are less than 100 meters away. Many elephants have shown signs of distress, including tears and mood swings, as soon as the thick haze sets in.
Two of our beautiful girl’s Birthdays this month – DokMai on April 6th (she is now ten years old), and FaaMai on April 17th (she is 14 years old). Neither of them have been through traditional training or forced in any way. They were gentle from the beginning and remain so to this day, gentle toward all life around them.
Khamla is upset, and many of our elephants have been off their usual gentle demeanor for the last few days. It is suspected that it has something to do with our very poor air quality for the past week here in Northern Thailand.
Years before the COVID-19 crisis, MohLoh worked at the logging camp and later worked to service rides for tourists. During COVID, the owner brought MohLoh back to the home village as there was no work to be had. The family was supported under the Foster Parent of the Gentle Giant Stay Home project. During their stay in the village, MohLoh gave birth to a little girl.
Elephants at Elephant Nature Park in Northern Thailand are free to roam the valley and immerse themselves in the Mae Taeng River and when it gets really uncomfortable in the hot season in Northern Thailand, they seek the cooling refuge of the mud bath.
Now that the weather at Elephant Nature Park is quite hot, elephants love to get wet in the river. Chaba, while roaming around, discovered a water tank and thought that that would be just fine. She quickly climbed into the tank for a refreshing dip.
